Your world, made layer by layer
Newcastle upon Tyne is my centre of the universe. Where’s yours?
I’ve used Newcastle as the example for my latest creation, but these layered wooden maps can celebrate any city, county or area you choose.
Perhaps it’s your hometown, a favourite holiday destination, the place you met someone special or a stretch of coastline you can never quite forget.
The North Carolina coastline and Outer Banks? A beautiful choice. The North Pole? Certainly memorable. Your own little corner of the world? That’s exactly the idea.
A map with depth and character
I create each piece by engraving and carving birch plywood, then assembling it in multiple layers. The layered construction gives the map physical depth, making it something you can explore and appreciate up close.
The finished piece is set within a 3D printed frame, which I also make myself. From working the plywood to printing the frame and assembling the map, it’s all made by me at Tyne & Layer.

Walnut Keepsake Box — little treasures, lovely craftsmanship and a secret way in
Every collection of treasures deserves a special home. Preferably one that doesn’t say “old phone charger” on the cardboard lid.
Our gorgeous walnut keepsake box combines the warmth and character of wood with a secret opening method. It’s a beautiful place for jewellery, sentimental keepsakes and those little objects that mean everything to their owner — even if nobody else understands why you’re keeping that particular pebble.
The opening adds a little intrigue to the experience. There’s a trick to getting inside, making the box as much fun to give as it is to receive.
The inspiration: Katya’s Trinkets
The example shown was created for my daughter, Katya. Its lid features a brass inlay spelling out “Katya’s Trinkets”, turning a beautiful box into something unmistakably hers.
It’s a lovely example of how personalisation can transform a gift. A name, a few meaningful words or a carefully chosen design can make it something the recipient will treasure alongside whatever they put inside.
As for Katya’s contents, I’m informed that ownership of the business does not grant Dad inspection rights.

Angel of the North — Northern pride, printed layer by layer
Some landmarks tell you where you are. The Angel of the North tells you you’re home.
Our 3D printed model celebrates that familiar silhouette: outstretched wings, unmistakable presence, and the confidence to stand on a hill in Gateshead through every variety of sideways rain.
Now you can enjoy a little of that presence in your own home — without surrendering the entire garden.
The story behind the wings
Created by sculptor Antony Gormley and completed in 1998, the real Angel stands in Gateshead, reaching 20 metres high, with wings stretching 54 metres across. That is a substantial commitment to personal space.
Its site has a connection to the coal mining that once took place beneath it. The sculpture offers a powerful link between the North East’s industrial past and its changing future: a region shaped by hard work, engineering, creativity and the people who made things happen.
For us, that makes the Angel much more than a striking shape. It represents a place with character, history and a strong sense of belonging.
A few facts to impress your visitors
• The real Angel is 20 metres tall. Ours is considerably easier to dust.
• Its wings span 54 metres. Excellent for making an entrance. Less practical in a terraced house.
• It has stood in Gateshead since 1998. A remarkably long time to hold the same pose without asking for a chair.
• Its connection to the mining beneath the site gives it roots as well as wings. A fitting tribute to a region that has always understood the value of hard graft.

This striking image of Persephone, my daughter’s favourite Greek goddess, was created to demonstrate what is possible—not to limit what can be made.
Your crystal can be completely personal to you.
A treasured photograph of a pet can be transformed into a beautifully detailed 2.5D portrait. A company logo can be suspended inside the crystal as an impressive corporate award or branded gift. For generations of British servicemen and women, the L1A1 SLR was more than simply an issued weapon. Chambering a 7.62 × 51mm NATO round, it became an enduring symbol of service—and a rifle remembered with an affection its replacement (in our opinion) never quite managed to inspire.
